{"id":747,"date":"2025-07-27T14:27:42","date_gmt":"2025-07-27T02:27:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unifynz.org\/?p=747"},"modified":"2025-08-14T14:05:59","modified_gmt":"2025-08-14T02:05:59","slug":"gene-technology-bill-opposition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unifynz.org\/index.php\/2025\/07\/27\/gene-technology-bill-opposition\/","title":{"rendered":"Gene Technology Bill &#8211; OPPOSITION"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>PUBLIC SUBMISSION STATEMENT &#8211; 15 February 2025<br>SUBJECT: Gene Technology Bill &#8211; OPPOSITION<br><br>OVERALL:<br><br>New Zealand should pause and take a &#8220;wait and see&#8221; approach on this Bill until more factual science, objective<br>international results, and extensive public input are gathered. Given the potential risks, this decision should go to a<br>Public Referendum, allowing New Zealanders to make an informed choice rather than having it imposed. NZers<br>deserve bodily autonomy and full informed consent.<br>Why is New Zealand, under Attorney-General Judith Collins, pushing this Bill when 26 countries have partially<br>banned GMOs? Are we once again being used as a global testing ground? (Note: Collins also holds key positions in<br>defence, GCSB, NZDSIS, space, and digital governance\u2014raising questions about her priorities and allegiances.)<br>A strong precautionary approach is required \u2013 we want truth and transparency. Once the genie is out of the bottle,<br>NZ won\u2019t recover on a multitude of levels.<br><br>POINTS OF CONCERN:<br><br>1) Labelling Requirements Critical &#8211;<br><br>The Bill removes the labelling requirement for gene-altered foods, allowing regulators to alter the national diet<br>without transparency. This violates the New Zealand Bill of Rights, specifically provision 10, as it exposes people to<br>unconsented scientific experimentation on health.<br><br>2) Economic Necessity \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High Failure Rate: Only 18% of biotech startups reach the market, and few generate significant revenue,<br>with bankruptcies peaking in 2023 (US National Center for Biotechnology Information).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unrealistic Promises: The biotech industry relies on aggressive PR, often exaggerating potential success to<br>attract investment and government grants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government-Mandated Use: The industry&#8217;s goal is mandated adoption, as seen during the pandemic,<br>leading to excessive corporate profits at public expense. Dr. Guy Hatchard \u2013 Biotechnology Threatens<br>Humans\u2026 (Feb 2025)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Economic Risks: Over-reliance on biotech can strain public finances, creating long-term debt and economic<br>instability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Questionable Growth Strategy: Deregulation is positioned as essential for economic growth, but the<br>industry&#8217;s track record suggests limited economic benefits and high financial risks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PUBLIC SUBMISSION STATEMENT &#8211;
